6 classic teen films for back to school feels

YOUTHREAD – Films

The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

“High-school life gets even more unbearable for Nadine when her best friend, Krista, starts dating her older brother.” – IMDb

Hailee is the “every girl” in this film.  She’s a little bratty albeit, but aren’t we all at 17? The film reflects how at that age we’re all just busting at our seams to break free from whatever is holding us back – stereotypes, strict parents, high school bullies and what not. Frustrated over wanting to get what we want (lest we know what that is) and thinking that everything is pretty much UNFAIR, The Edge of Seventeen just gets it.

Clueless (1995)

“A rich high school student tries to boost a new pupil’s popularity, but reckons without affairs of the heart getting in the way.” – IMDb

Iconic outfits and the timelessly cute face of Paul Rudd (that dude never aged, he is a vampire I tell you) are enough reasons to mark this as a rewatch worthy film.

Pretty in Pink (1986)

“A poor girl must choose between the affections of her doting childhood sweetheart and a rich but sensitive playboy.” – IMDb

Of course there’s a John Hughes film here – this wouldn’t be a “classic teen movies list” without it.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

“A pretty, popular teenager can’t go out on a date until her ill-tempered older sister does.” – IMDb

If you’re looking for that “grand” teen romantic moment this movie is for you. It makes you miss Heath – I mean who else would sing to you from the bleachers like a huge goofball – and remind you that your school experience obviously cant compare. The newer teen films could never. On a side note, Julia Stiles lived the angsty cool girl life for me.

Mean Girls (2004)

“Cady Heron is a hit with The Plastics, the A-list girl clique at her new school, until she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George.” – IMDb

Who hasn’t seen Mean Girls at least once? The countless memes and unforgettable quotes  – this film is always a fun watch even if we all knows what happens next – let’s just say there’s nothing like the pettiness and satire against real life mean girls.

Me and Earl and The Dying Girl (2015)

“High schooler Greg, who spends most of his time making parodies of classic movies with his co-worker Earl, finds his outlook forever altered after befriending a classmate who has just been diagnosed with cancer.” – IMDb

Heart-warming yet heart-wrenching at the same time; this film is a wonderful medley of what it is to grow up, have friends, and to move beyond the self. Crass, funny, and serious at times – it’s a good watch and a good “reality-check” moment.
